This class introduces students to oil painting through direct alla prima still life painting. Working wet into wet, students will paint primarily from observation and learn to apply paint confidently, from thin washes to thicker passages straight from the tube. Emphasis is placed on seeing relationships, organizing values, and using brushwork and edges to create a clear and engaging composition.
Especially welcoming to beginners, its perfect for those who want to learn a new technique or need a refresher. This class focuses on painting studies in one sitting while also addressing how to extend a painting over multiple sessions without relying on traditional layered or indirect methods. Students will gain a practical understanding of palette setup, canvas preparation, and brush handling while developing a strong foundation for painting in oils that can support future work in still life, landscape, or figurative painting.
