Part II: Amedeo Modigliani: Bohemia Died With Modi
Amedeo Modigliani, fiercely proud of his Jewish and Italian heritage, arrived in Montmartre, Paris in 1906 at age 21, quickly becoming part of the vibrant bohemian avant-garde alongside artists like Picasso. Known for his striking looks, wild public behavior, and ever-present copy of Dante’s Inferno, he earned the nickname “Modi” — a playful twist on his name and the French word maudit (cursed). Refusing to follow any artistic movement, he forged his path in painting and sculpture, creating elegant caryatids, distinctive portraits, and unforgettable nudes. Plagued by tuberculosis and substance abuse, he died tragically at 34, followed a day later by the suicide of his beloved, pregnant partner, Jeanne Hébuterne. His short, brilliant life left behind a body of work that continues to captivate and define the spirit of a lost bohemian era.
